5 Easy Coastal Hikes in Tenerife – Beautiful Walks by the Ocean

Tenerife is best known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, volcanic terrain and steep ravines. Along the coastline, however, you will discover a completely different side of the island with relaxed hiking trails, ocean views and quiet natural spots.

Alongside regions like the Anaga Mountains and the rugged Teno Mountains, these coastal routes highlight the diversity of hiking in Tenerife.

If you are not planning a full day mountain hike but are looking for an easy walk in Tenerife, these routes are a great option.

In this article, I will show you five easy coastal hikes in Tenerife that I have explored myself. Expect quiet paths by the sea, natural pools, small bays and scenic viewpoints.

Overview of the Coastal Hikes in Tenerife

To help you get a better overview, the map below shows all the hikes featured in this article. This makes it easy to see which routes are located on the north coast, in the southwest or in the southeast of Tenerife — and which hike fits best into your travel plans.

Many of the most beautiful hikes in Tenerife are located away from larger towns. Public transport in rural areas can work, but it is often less convenient especially if you want to combine multiple hikes.

For these coastal hikes, a rental car is usually the easiest option. It gives you the flexibility to reach more remote starting points and plan your day more freely.

Renting a car in Tenerife – is it worth it?

Many of the best places in Tenerife – especially in Teide Park or along the coast – are difficult to reach without a car. Public transport is often slow and inconvenient.

That’s why I always book my rental car in Tenerife online in advance – usually via DiscoverCars, as I often find the best deals and the widest selection there.

  • Mountain roads can be steep and winding
  • Choose full insurance with zero excess
  • Small cars are usually sufficient

Hiking tour 1: Las Aguas – El Rosario

Easy Coastal Walk with Beautiful Views in Northern Tenerife

View of Las Aguas

This short hike along the north coast of Tenerife combines quiet trails with beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean and the island’s rugged coastline. The path runs above the sea and feels calm and relaxed, even though it’s not far from small villages.

Along the way, you’ll pass coastal vegetation, agricultural areas and several viewpoints overlooking the wild north coast. This makes the hike a great choice if you’re looking for an easy walk in Tenerife that still offers plenty of scenery.

From Las Aguas to El Rosario

The hike starts directly near the coast and initially follows an easy path above the ocean. After just a few minutes, you’ll get your first great views of the Atlantic and the rugged northern coastline of Tenerife.

Along the way, the route alternates between open coastal sections, light vegetation and small agricultural areas. The path remains easy to follow and never feels demanding.

As you continue, the trail gradually climbs and leads up to a small, quiet settlement above the coast. The atmosphere changes slightly here before you return along the same route and enjoy the coastal views once again on the way back.

Hiking tour 2: Rambla de Castro – El Toscal – Gordejuela – La Calera

Coastal Walk with Palm Groves and Cliff Views

Las Ruinas de Gordejuela

The hike through the Rambla de Castro is one of the most beautiful easy coastal walks in Tenerife. This varied route combines green hillsides, coastal paths, small ravines and impressive viewpoints overlooking the rugged north coast.

What makes this hike especially interesting is the mix of nature and cultural landscape. You’ll walk through palm groves, along steep coastal sections and past several scenic viewpoints. Overall, the route feels much more diverse than many other short coastal walks on the island.

Past Viewpoints and Through Lush Coastal Landscapes

From the village of Las Rosas, the trail first leads to the Mirador de la Gordejuela, where you get your first great views of the coastline. From there, the path continues into the Barranco de la Calera, a small ravine that adds some variety to the route.

Soon after, you reach another viewpoint at the Mirador del Fortín, offering wide views over the Atlantic. The trail then takes you along the protected natural area of the Rambla de Castro and down towards the dramatic cliffs, with views of Morro Alto and La Bucarona.

The return route follows a higher path above the coastline, passing the small chapel of Ermita de San Pedro and continuing through the green landscape of the Rambla de Castro. This section, with its palm groves and peaceful atmosphere, is one of the highlights of the hike.

From there, the trail leads back across the Barranco de la Calera and past the Mirador de la Gordejuela before returning to Las Rosas.

Hiking tour 3: Las Arenas – Las Salinas – Las Mujeres – Playa del Fraile

A peaceful coastal hike near Buenavista del Norte

Playa de las Arenas

This coastal hike near Buenavista del Norte leads through an open and almost barren landscape in the far northwest of Tenerife. The trail often follows the coastline directly and offers constant views of the rugged shore, the waves and the surrounding mountains.

One of the most interesting aspects of this route is the contrast between the wild volcanic scenery and the cultivated banana plantations along the way.

Overall, the hike feels quiet and uncrowded. If you’re looking for a relaxed coastal walk in Tenerife with wide views and plenty of ocean scenery, this is a great option.

Along the Coast to Small Bays and Natural Pools

The hike starts at Playa de las Arenas and initially follows the Sendero de las Salinas directly along the rugged volcanic coastline. After a short out-and-back section to the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the trail continues above the coast.

From here, the route becomes especially scenic, running between ocean views and banana plantations until you reach Playa de las Mujeres.

Along the way, there are several opportunities to take short detours down to small bays and natural pools. The trail continues towards Playa Punta del Fraile, before returning along the same route.

Hiking tour 4: Puertito de Güímar – Malpaís de Güímar – Punta del Pedrón – Montana Grande

An easy coastal hike through lava fields and volcanic landscapes

Malpaís de Güímar

This circular hike in the Malpaís de Güímar leads through one of the most impressive volcanic landscapes in Tenerife. The area has been protected since 1987 and is characterised by dark lava fields, cacti and unique vegetation adapted to the dry climate.

The hike feels quiet, open and almost untouched. Instead of forests, you’ll find wide volcanic terrain, clear lines and frequent views of the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Region
    Southeast coast
  • Distance
    6.2 km / 2 h
  • Elevation gain
    ↑↓ 140 m
  • Difficulty
    Easy
  • Starting point

Between Ocean Views, Lava Fields and Volcanoes

At the beginning, the trail follows the coastline for around 2.4 km. You walk across dark lava fields with constant views of the ocean and the rugged shoreline.

After that, the route turns inland towards Montaña Grande, where the landscape changes slightly and the paths become sandier.

At the foot of the volcano, the trail continues along quiet paths past cacti and typical vegetation of the Malpaís region. Informational signs along the way provide insight into the unique characteristics of this protected natural area.

The return leads back through the varied volcanic landscape to the starting point.

Hiking tour 5: Alcalá – Playa La Jaquita – Punta Blanca

A leisurely coastal path between Alcalá and Punta Blanca

Coastal walk view

This easy walk in Alcalá is perfect if you’re looking for a relaxed route right by the ocean. The path mostly follows the coastline and offers continuous views of the Atlantic and the dark volcanic rocks along the shore.

The route is not demanding and ideal if you want a short coastal walk with plenty of sea views — without heading into the mountains or more remote areas.

  • Region
    Southwest coast
  • Distance
    6 km / 1:45 h
  • Elevation gain
    ↑↓ 37 m
  • Difficulty
    Easy
  • Starting point
    Central parking area in Alcalá

Walking Along the Coastal Promenade

From the starting point in Alcalá, the route first passes spots like Charco de los Sargos, La Caleta de Alcalá, Playa La Jaquita and the Piscina Natural de Alcalá.

The path then continues past a small viewpoint and follows the coastline towards Punta Blanca and Guía de Isora.

Along the way, paved coastal paths alternate with open sea views and small swimming spots. You’ll often find places to stop, relax or go for a swim.

The return follows the same route, giving you another chance to enjoy the relaxed coastal scenery at your own pace.

Final Thoughts: Easy Coastal Walks in Tenerife

Tenerife is often known for its dramatic mountain hikes, but the island also offers plenty of beautiful and much more relaxed coastal walks.

Along the coastline, you’ll find a great mix of ocean views, natural pools, volcanic landscapes and quiet bays. If you’re looking for easy and enjoyable hikes, these coastal routes are a great way to experience Tenerife from a different perspective.
