Hiking on Terceira Island (Azores)

Terceira is one of the hidden gems of the Azores, offering not only stunning landscapes but also unforgettable hiking experiences. The island feels like a living postcard, shaped by volcanic peaks, lush green valleys, historic towns, dramatic coastlines and mysterious forests.

Explore the diverse nature of Terceira and discover why this island is a paradise for hikers and outdoor lovers.

In this guide, I’ll show you three of the best hikes on Terceira that I explored during my trip.

The first hike takes you deep into a magical forest, where the Mistérios Negros trail winds through dense vegetation and volcanic terrain.

On the second route, you’ll discover the rugged coastline of Terceira on a scenic coastal hike at Baías da Agualva.

The third hike leads you across the Monte Brasil peninsula in Angra do Heroísmo, combining history, viewpoints and relaxed walking trails.

Compact Travel Info for Terceira

Character

Terceira offers a diverse landscape ranging from green plateaus and coastal trails to volcanic craters and moorlands. Weather conditions can vary quickly – from fog and sunshine to sudden rain. Trails often lead through both humid forest paths and open terrain.

Best time to visit

Terceira has a mild, oceanic climate with relatively stable temperatures year-round.
The months from April to October usually offer the best conditions for hiking, although weather changes can occur at any time. In winter, rain and wind are more frequent, and higher elevations can feel noticeably cooler.

Trip duration

For the hikes presented in this guide, 5–7 days are ideal to explore different regions of the island without rushing. Individual trails can also be done as day trips.

Transport

Hiking trails are spread across the entire island. The most flexible way to explore Terceira is by rental car, as public transport is limited when it comes to accessing trailheads. Parking is available at most starting points.

Accommodation

Good bases for hiking include Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, as well as other central towns. These locations offer a wide range of accommodation, restaurants and infrastructure, with short driving distances to the island’s hiking areas.

Gear & preparation

Trails can include wet meadows, lava fields and unpaved paths.
Sturdy footwear, rain protection and enough water are essential.

Weather and wind conditions can change quickly, so staying flexible with your daily plans is highly recommended.

How to get to Terceira

Flights to the Azores

The easiest and fastest way to reach Terceira is by flying to Lajes Airport near Praia da Vitória. There are direct flights from several European cities, especially during the main travel season.

Alternatively, you can fly to São Miguel and continue to Terceira with a short domestic flight. There are frequent connections between the islands.

To compare prices and routes, I usually use Skyscanner*

Getting Around Terceira

Renting a Car on Terceira – Is It Worth It?

The best way to explore Terceira is by car. Many highlights, such as Monte Brasil, Mistérios Negros, or secluded coastlines, are difficult to reach without a rental car.

That’s why I always book my rental car in the Azores online in advance – usually through DiscoverCars, because I often find the best deals there and the selection is wider.

🌍 My Recommendation:

👉 Find and book affordable rental cars in the Azores now*
✔️ Free cancellation & transparent pricing

Driving in the Azores

Exploring the Azores by car is the most flexible option. Roads can be narrow and winding, especially in rural areas, and animals may cross the road.

Plan your routes in advance, refuel regularly and always park in designated areas.

Public transport on Terceira

Buses connect the main towns and some tourist spots, but services are limited in remote areas.

For hiking, public transport is only partly practical, so allow extra time and flexibility.

👉 Check routes and timetables on the official transport website.

Hike 1: Gruta do Natal – Mistérios Negros – Pico Gaspar

Terceira’s most adventurous forest hike

Located in the central highlands of Terceira, this 5 km loop near Gruta do Natal is one of the island’s most unique hikes.
It takes you through dense laurel forest, volcanic terrain and remote landscapes that feel completely untouched.

  • Difficulty

  • Starting point

Natural trails, forest paths, short road sections

Getting there

The trail starts near Gruta do Natal in central Terceira.

  • ~15 min drive from Angra do Heroísmo
  • ~25 min from Praia da Vitória

Free parking is available at the trailhead.

Public transport is not a reliable option here, so renting a car is highly recommended.

What to expect on the trail

The hike begins on a forest path and quickly leads into a dense, humid environment.
Tall trees, thick moss and twisted branches create a mystical atmosphere that feels very different from typical coastal hikes.

As you continue, the terrain becomes more challenging. Expect:

  • exposed tree roots
  • muddy sections
  • uneven lava rock
  • narrow and overgrown passages

Even though the trail is well marked, careful footing is required—especially after rain.

Mistérios Negros Hiking Trail with juniper and sphagnum moss

A raw and untouched landscape

Mistérios Negros is known for its wild and natural character.
You’ll pass small wetlands, volcanic formations and sections where the vegetation almost closes in around the trail.

This is one of the best places on Terceira to experience the island’s original ecosystem up close.

Good to know

  • Hiking boots are strongly recommended
  • Trails can be very slippery after rain
  • No facilities or food options along the route
  • Weather can change quickly in this area

Optional extension: Pico Gaspar

For more experienced hikers, the route can be extended with a climb to Pico Gaspar.

The ascent is:

  • steep
  • sometimes slippery
  • not always clearly defined

In return, you’ll get wide views over the island’s volcanic landscape and the west coast.

Skip this section if conditions are wet or visibility is poor.

Hike on your own or with a guide?

You can hike this route independently, but it requires good footing and basic navigation skills. Parts of the trail are not clearly marked, and weather can change quickly.

A guided tour is a great option if you prefer an easier experience or want to learn more about the landscape.

The best coastal hike on Terceira

You’ll walk close to the edge with constant views of the Atlantic and the rugged coastline.

Highlights include:

  • Ponta do Mistério with dramatic cliff views
  • remote coastal sections with almost no crowds
  • powerful waves crashing against volcanic rock

Some sections are exposed, so be careful in wind or wet conditions.
