Slovenia is a European country located between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea. Due to its diverse landscape, Slovenia is particularly popular with outdoor and hiking vacationers. Around 13% of the country is protected, so a trip to Slovenia promises adventure in countless nature parks. Most tourists are drawn to the Julian Alps, Karavanke and Kamnik-Savinja Alps in the north of the country, where the two popular destinations of Triglav National Park and the Soca Valley are located. But the low mountain ranges, forests and lakes in the south of Slovenia also promise breathtaking nature experiences. Here you will come across brown bears, the largest caves in Europe and picturesque Slovenian villages. You can also enjoy a beach vacation on the Adriatic coast in the southwest of Slovenia, countless wine plantations await you in the east of the country and Slovenia’s idyllic towns will show you the country’s culture.
As you can see, there are plenty of reasons to travel to Slovenia. On my travel blog, I show you the country as I experienced it. In this blog post, I have put together the most beautiful natural highlights of Slovenia. Have fun reading my travel reports.
The highlights of Slovenia
On my road trip through Slovenia, I got to know many wonderful places, incredible landscapes and lovely people. During my 10-day round trip, I saw great sights and attractions and collected the most impressive natural spectacles.
My journey through Slovenia starts in the Triglav National Park in the northwest of the country. There I visited the largest lake in Slovenia, which is located near the famous Lake Bled, and also completed a spectacular hike in the Valley of the Seven Lakes.
Continue along the Soča valley, whose turquoise waters meander picturesquely through the Slovenian Alps. Idyllic villages such as Kanal, Most, Bovec, Soča, Kobarid and Tolmin, water sports and hikes await you here. You can also explore raging waterfalls and a magnificent gorge.
Numerous hiking options await you in the Julian Alps. An exciting hike leads to the summit of the Krn and the glacial lakes of the same name. There are also numerous hiking tours in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Particularly popular is a visit to the Velika Planina plateau, where a historic alpine pasture is located, or the Orglice waterfall nearby.
In the southwest is the huge Skocjan cave system, which will leave you speechless. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is therefore a popular tourist attraction. Nearby is a beautiful castle built into a rock.

The authors give travel tips especially for individual and low budget travelers. Moreover, not only the well-known sights are described, but also more unknown places are mentioned.
Public transportation in Slovenia
The country has a very good rail network, so you can reach all regions by train. However, the trains are in a rather dilapidated condition and run very slowly. Train tickets in Slovenia are very cheap. A journey from Ljubljana to Bled, for example, costs €6. At weekends, ticket prices are also significantly reduced and people under the age of 26 also receive a discount. You can buy train tickets online, at the station or directly on the train. You can find more information and timetables on the railroad company’s website.
Bus tickets are also cheap in Slovenia. You can find more information and timetables on the website of the Slovenian bus company. There are also several domestic routes that connect the larger cities such as Bled, Koper, Piran or Maribor. You can find all bus connections from Ljubljana on the following website.
Driving in Slovenia
You are most flexible with your own car. The road conditions in Slovenia are very good. Entry from Germany is possible without any problems via Austria. But the borders from Italy, Hungary and Croatia to Slovenia are also open. Please note that you need a vignette for Slovenia, which costs 15 euros for a normal car for 7 days and 30 euros for 30 days. You also need a vignette for Austria!
Hotels in Slovenia
Tourism has long since arrived in Slovenia, so you will find many hotels, especially in the popular vacation regions. If you prefer authentic and simpler accommodation, I recommend one of the many Slovenian private accommodations. You can find these mostly family-run guesthouses all over the country. Many of them stay away from the well-known online portals, so you will have to call in advance. In the vacation regions, every larger village has its own tourist information office, which can also look for available accommodation for you on site. This meant that we were always able to find accommodation, even in the high season. We only had problems finding accommodation on one day, so we even had to change regions. It is therefore advisable to book in advance in the high season. The easiest way, however, is to book via Booking.com* Due to the variety of hotels, you are sure to find accommodation in Slovenia that meets your needs.
If you would like to spend the night in a mountain hu0t in the Julian Alps, I recommend the homepage of the Slovenian Alpine Community. There you will find the names and telephone numbers of all the mountain huts.
Conclusion on the sights in Slovenia
Slovenia offers the right destination for every taste. There are typical sights and tourist attractions, but also unknown highlights. You will also find plenty of natural spectacles in Slovenia. I personally visited all the sights mentioned in the blog article myself. They all had their own special charm and I wouldn’t want to miss any of them. My round trip through Slovenia lasted 10 whole days and I was able to enjoy all the destinations and was never rushed. However, this type of trip can only be managed with a rental car. I wouldn’t have been able to visit half as much in that time using public transport. As you could see, there are a lot of attractions in Slovenia.
I hope you enjoyed my travelogue about the nature sights in Slovenia. On my Slovenia Blog I show you other beautiful travel destinations in Slovenia and share valuable tips and experiences for your trip to Slovenia. Did you like my blog post? Was I able to help you? Then I would be happy if you recommend my travel blog, leave a comment, or follow me on Instagram. Thanks for reading and have fun on your vacation in Slovenia.
